The new Goods and Services Tax (GST) rule by the government is set to make free meals offered by employers to employees taxable. According to this rule, GST would be payable if there is supply of free goods or services from the employer to the employee exceeding the stipulated sum. An exception to this GST rule states that ‘gifts’ to an employee by an employer, not exceeding Rs.50,000 in value in a financial year, shall not be liable for GST. This new rule will come into effect from 1st July, 2017 as announced by Finance minister Mr. Arun Jaitley. A simple solution to this problem is meal cards.
